Anger as poor pony drowns in canal while getting water

THE sight of a poor pony who drowned on the Grand Canal was another harrowing discovery made by volunteers from My Lovely Horse Rescue.

The charity group posted the distressing image over the weekend, after finding the pony dead in the water on the Bluebell Locke, nearest Ballyfermot.

“This is why we go mad, no water left for these poor horses, no one checking on them except us,” said the group in a social media post.

Speaking to The Echo on Tuesday, a MLHR spokesperson said they have had to get Dublin Fire Brigade out twice recently, to retrieve an equine from the canal.

THE sight of a poor pony who drowned on the Grand Canal was another harrowing discovery made by volunteers from My Lovely Horse Rescue, reports Maurice Garvey.

Speaking to The Echo on Tuesday, a MLHR spokesperson said they have had to get Dublin Fire Brigade out twice recently, to retrieve an equine from the canal.

“It is very sad, and to think of how the pony at the weekend died. The cases with the fire brigade, thankfully they both were fine.

“It is a constant thing in the area and it is probably why we are so disappointed, because we are always checking these parts. Sadly, it only takes a minute for it to happen.”

Two weeks ago, MLHR were called out to Tipperary after another equine was found dead in the water.

“Her six-month old baby foal was standing there watching her. The mother went into a stream to get water and could have been dead for up to two days. At least we managed to save the foal.”

MLHR have praised Dublin City Council for establishing an animal welfare unit, and hope other local authorities follow suit.

“It is all about working together, gardai, councils. In fairness to Dublin City Council, they are the only ones with an animal welfare unit and they are out there doing good work. The canal is in the charge of Irish Waterways, but the Dept of Agriculture are the cause of a lot of this, they won’t release any funding or support.”

MLHR are running a raffle at the moment for a three-bed townhouse in Dublin 15, and encourage residents to buy a ticket and help them support more animals.

Tickets are €20 and can be purchased at shorturl.at/ktvL7
