August Sports Star of the Month: Thomas Abom
IT WAS all smiles for Thomas Abom when he clinched the AIG Irish Men’s Amateur Close Championship.
The Edmondstown golfer, who is only 19 years old, secured the top prize for the first time with a brilliant birdie at the second tie hole in the final.
Abom is the first Edmondstown player to win a major Irish championship and he showed plenty of nerve to overcome Dun Laoghaire’s Richard Sykes at the second extra hole.
“I’m delighted to have won the Amateur Close Championship, it’s a dream come true,” Thomas told The Echo.
It has been a busy year for Thomas who is also competing in the Irish Intervarsity Championship in Donegal this week.
“It’s pretty much the end of season now. I’m at the intervarsity and looking forward to it.
“I’m happy the way the year went and looking forward to next year.
“It has been a busy season and I’m just delighted to have won the Amateur Close Championship”.
