IT WAS a special occasion as one of Tallaght’s most familiar faces, Bridie Sweeney, celebrated her 90th birthday with family and friends, reports Aimee Walsh.

The former Tallaght Person of the Year and last Mayor of Tallaght celebrated the big 90 on Sunday, September 26 which was celebrated with a surprise party by family and friends.

Bridie’s family marked the occasion with a dinner followed by a surprise trip to a hotel with her two daughters.

Bridie’s neighbour Michael paid tribute to her on her milestone birthday.

“She has done so much great work in Tallaght down through the years”, he said. “Us as her neighbours see all the good things she brings to the community, and she would never speak about it.”

Bridie was recently awarded a medal for 50 years of contribution with St Vincent de Paul, where she was acknowledged for her selfless work within the community of Tallaght.

“I have lived beside her all my life. My family moved into St Maelruain’s Park at the same time as Bridie and her husband Gerry and my brothers and Bridie’s sons would have played football together,” said Michael.

“Even now when my grandson comes to visit the house Bridie is out with sweets and if there is a child’s birthday on the road she sends them over a little present, there is not a child on the road that doesn’t get something – she is an amazing woman.”

From all of us at The Echo, we would like to wish Bridie a very happy 90th birthday.
