Gardai and bomb disposal experts at the scene

Shocked builders found the devices under a water cylinder upstairs, called gardai and evacuated the building.

Gardai responded to the scene immediately with the army and bomb disposal experts.

The road was closed off to the public while the scene was examined.

The Echo understands the homeowners, who are having renovations done, were none the wiser as to the potentially explosive contents.

The Echo also understands that the smoke bomb was real, but authorities at the scene could not be sure if the hand grenade was live, and took it away safely for analysis.

A Garda spokesperson said: “At approximately 11am, gardai were called following the discovery of suspect devices at St Teresa’s Road, Crumlin, Dublin 12.

“The Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit safely contained the device and took it away for analysis. No further information is available at this time. Enquiries are ongoing.”
