Calls for council to buy historic Airlie House

HISTORIC Airlie House in Lucan is on the market for a guide price of €450k but local representatives want the local authority to buy the 1840 building and preserve it for community and heritage purposes.

The sprawling period house lies on a 0.75 acre site in Adamstown.

The Society for Old Lucan (SOL), a local history group, believe the Protected Structure, which was partially de-roofed last year is at “great risk.”

Posting on X on March 12, the group said they would be shocked if the nine-bed property “remains intact for three more months.”

At the recent county council meeting, a number of Lucan councillors urged SDCC to purchase the property.

In response at the meeting, SDCC chief executive Colm Ward said he would not comment on the purchasing of private properties but cited their community facilities programme that they are working through “with a lot of new facilities in the pipeline.”

According to the brochure by Coonan Property, the property is in need of “extensive repair and refurbishment and would not be suitable for immediate occupation.”

The site offers a large open space with ample parking and a “blank canvas” to create a private garden well set back from neighbouring buildings.

Development potential is limited to the existing building as the maximum residential units have been reached under SDZ for Adamstown.

Previous planning permission for a creche but may be suitable for a number of other uses.

Possible uses include a large family home, creche facility, public amenity building other commercial possibilities.

Adamstown is a modern residential development which has undergone significant expansion and urbanization in recent years.
