Chef Rachel Allen launches Sacred Heart ‘Cookery Mondays’ book

SACRED Heart Senior School, Killinarden, officially launched a new book of recipes called ‘Cookery Mondays’, on Thursday, May 12, which was attended by celebrity chef Rachel Allen.

The book is the work of Ms Geraldine Gleeson, a former teacher in the school, who, during the first year of her retirement, returned to the school every Monday to cook and bake with her former students in sixth class.

Geraldine’s commitment to her visiting role gave rise, naturally, to the title of the book; ‘Cookery Mondays’, which contains 28 easy to follow recipes, with all measurements given in mugs and spoonsful, so that the children will be able to repeat them at home.

The book is Geraldine’s legacy to the school, and she hopes that it will be referred to and used by the children in school for many years to come.

It is bright and colourful and includes a photograph of every child who took part in Ms Gleeson’s cookery Mondays throughout the school year.

Celebrity chef Rachel Allen, from Ballymaloe Co. Cork was guest of honour at the book launch.

She spoke glowingly about the book and about the importance of young children learning the basic skills of cookery.

Each student then received a complimentary copy of the book as a memento of their part in its creation.
