Cherryfield honoured after 40 years on the go

CHERRYFIELD United Football Club were recently honoured by the Lord Mayor of Dublin after celebrating their 40th anniversary.
Founded back in 1976 by Brendan O’Byrne, the club was initially composed of just schoolboys but, in 1978, fielded their first senior side who made an immediate impact, winning both the Morton Cup and Division Three of the United Churches League.
Moving to the Leinster Junior League in 1981 the team picked up a number of leagues and trophies and were voted Club of the Year in 1995.
They transferred to the Leinster Senior League in 1996 and topped Division Two, Three and Premier en route to attaining Major One Saturday status just six years ago while also winning the Lummy O’Reilly and Wally Winn Cups along the way.
But the lure of neighbouring clubs proved too much in recent seasons and today the club fields just one senior side in Division Two Saturday who are in the hunt for their second successive promotion this year.
“We had 15 schoolboy teams between ’95 and 2008 with lots of success, but unfortunately we don’t have any at moment but hope to rebuild” said former club secretary and assistant team manager Aiden Griffin
