Community Services Fun Day celebrates people and services

SOUTH Dublin County Council, Tallaght Garda Station and The Square Shopping Centre are holding a free Community Services Fun Day this Saturday, July 20.

The event will take place in Tallaght Garda Station and the east car part at Level One in The Square, from 11am to 3pm with a sensory hour being held from 11am to midday.

Services such as Dublin Fire Brigade, the National Ambulance Service, Tallaght Hospital, Blood Bikes East, Water Safety Ireland, and Dublin Airport Fire Brigade will be in attendance.

Tallaght Garda Station will be open to the public, where people can get tours of the cells and interview rooms, and there will be a display of garda vehicles where people can test the sirens.

Emer Lamon, a sergeant in the community policing unit of Tallaght Garda Station told The Echo about why Tallaght Garda Station is participating in the fun day.

“The day is all about community services in the area,” said Sgt Lamon.

“Tallaght Garda Station is a community service, and we are here to help the community.

“It’s important to be part of the event as we are part of the community. It gives people an opportunity to interact face-to-face and meet their local gardaí.

“It is also an opportunity for children to familiarise themselves with the work we carry out and to understand that we are here to help them if they ever need us.

“It’s about breaking down barriers and welcoming people from the community into the station.”

The day will also feature a talent show, a bouncy castle, face painting, a game zone, a sensory area, and a DJ.

Commenting on the overall impact she hopes the day will have, Sgt Lamon said: “It is about creating knowledge of the services available to people in the area.

“It’s about breaking down barriers and having those face-to-face interactions with local services.

“It’s about getting to know what amenities are available in the area and where to reach out for help or assistance.

“Tallaght is a great community with great community spirit and it’s all about celebrating the people and services in Tallaght.

“Giving something positive back to the community. Most of all it’s a fun, free family event and what we hope for on the day is for people to come along and join us with their friends and families and have some fun!”

The event this weekend will be the second Community Services Fun Day, building on the success of last year’s event which saw The Square record its highest ever footfall on a Saturday.
