Conor McGregor has again announced his retirement

Conor McGregor has again announced his retirement from the UFC, tweeting 'Hey guys I've decided to retire from fighting. Thank you all for the amazing memories! What a ride it's been!"

It is not the first time the Crumlin man has declared he was walking away from the sport having previously done so in 2016 and 2019 before making a return.

A former two-division title holder in the UFC at featherweight and lightweight, McGregor had sparked hope among his massive following that he was on his way back following his impressive victory over Donald Cerrone back in January.

That fight had ended an absence of over a year from the UFC for the Dubliner who had suffered a strength-sapping defeat at the hands of Kahbib Nurmagomedov back in October of 2018.

There had been no shortage of speculation as to whom McGregor’s next opponent could have been with Brazilian Anderson Silva among those who had been strongly tipped to face off against him.

A rematch against Nurmagomedov or a clash with Jorge Masvidal were also viable prospects for the 31-year-old.
