Contractor to begin Avonbeg Cycle Scheme in New Year

THE AVONBEG Cycle Scheme is progressing as South Dublin County Council has appointed a contractor for the project, reports Aimee Walsh.

The proposed 1.3km cycle scheme is intended to provide more sustainable transport options for commuters as well as active travel benefits for local communities. It will provide cycle connectivity from the Old Bawn Road to the Dodder Greenway via Avonbeg Road on route 7 on the Cycle South Dublin Plan.

Clonmel Enterprises Ltd has been recently appointed as the contractor for the scheme, with the intention to start works in January 2022 following preparation work carried out during the month of December.

This preparation work will include trial holes, setting out the works and establishing a small compound, which will be located in the grass area to the north of Avonbeg Road, opposite Avonbeg Gardens. This compound will be used as a material stockpile and have a small mobile canteen for the staff, with the main compound located on the N81 beside Kilsaran.

Some of the main characteristics of the proposed design will be to upgrade the existing 2m wide footpath on the north side of the road to a 4m shared pedestrian and cycle space, which will link up with the N81 crossing at Glenview, the Dodder Greenway and the retail units at St Dominic’s Shopping Centre.

According to the council, the design has been adjusted based on input which was received during the non-statutory public consultation and the final designs are being refined and incorporated into the scheme.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of May 2022.
