COURT: Detective drew gun in attempt to apprehend knife-wielding Tallaght man

Jason Fay was allegedly threatening people with a knife on Main Street in Tallaght.

He was arrested and brought before Tallaght Court the following day.

Fay, aged 40, with an address at Glenview Park, Tallaght, is charged with possession of a knife at Main Street in Tallaght, on December 15, 2016.

Det-Garda Kieran McGrath told Judge Coughlan that he was objecting to bail due to the seriousness of the charge, an offence under section 9 (1) of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act.

He said that it will be alleged that on Thursday, December 15, he and other gardaí had been called to Main Street in Tallaght after a report that a man was threatening people with a knife.

Det-Garda McGrath said it will be alleged that one of his colleagues had to produce their firearm and point it at Fay before he would drop the knife.

He said it will be alleged that Fay had been holding a wooden spoon in his left hand and had something concealed in his right-hand sleeve which turned out to be a knife.

Fay dropped the knife on the ground and it was kicked away.

He said Fay had allegedly chased a woman with the knife, but the woman had not turned up and could not be located.

Det-Garda McGrath said Fay gave false details when brought to Tallaght Garda Station and he was later charged.

In response to Fay’s solicitor, Det-Garda McGrath said Fay had been drinking.

The lawyer put it to the garda that if Fay undertook not to drink and to reside at home would he consent to bail.
Judge Coughlan said there would be nothing stopping Fay having a drink.

The case went to second calling.

When the case was recalled, Judge Coughlan said he was not refusing bail but would remand Fay in custody to Cloverhill Court on December 21 next for a further bail application.
