Decision to re-open Lidl store in Tallaght ‘under review’

LIDL’s plans to develop a new, larger discount store on its current site in Fortunestown Lane  are now “under review” following the damage caused to their existing store last Friday, March 2.

Permission was granted last October by South Dublin County Council for the demolition of the existing Lidl store on Fortunestown Lane and the construction of a two-storey licensed discount food store on site.

The Echo understands that Lidl is now considering whether to re-open the store on Fortunestown Lane, re-build the existing store or to proceed with its planning permission for a new, two-storey supermarket.

In a statement released today, Lidl said: “We can confirm that it has been our intention to build a new larger store on Fortunestown Lane.

“Given the events of Friday last, that decision is now under review.

“We currently have engineers and consultants on site assessing the significant damage caused to the building and we will await their recommendations before making a final decision regarding future plans.”

On Monday, Lidl held a meeting with its team from Fortunestown, with all 30 staff members being redeployed to other stores in the area.

Lidl said: “We will not have the criminal actions of others impact on the livelihood of our hard working team.

“On behalf of the Store Manager Ruth and her team we would like to thank everyone for their kind words in the aftermath of this incident.

“The team are genuinely blown away by the swell of support from, not just the community that they serve daily, but from right around the country.”
