DFB: Landlords are obliged to supply fire blankets and fire alarms to tenants

Dublin Fire Brigade have shared a video of them attending an apartment fire recently and reminded residents of rental properties that their landlord is obliged to provide them with a fire blanket and a smoke alarm.

The new rental housing regulations came into effect on July 1, and are aimed at increasing fire-safety standards.

Of the changes in regulations, the most significant include the requirement for every dwelling to have a “suitable self-contained fire detection and alarm system”.

Added to this, emergency lighting should be provided in all common areas within a multi-unit building. Such a building is described as one that contains two or more dwellings “that share a common access”.

Attached to the video by Dublin Fire Brigade they said: “Are you renting a property? Remember landlords are legally obliged to provide you with a fire blanket and smoke alarm.

“Also, with effect from 1 July 2017 when new regulations came into force, where necessary, a carbon monoxide alarm in a suitable position should be provided.

“A resident in this fire extinguished it using a fire blanket.”
