Duggan strikes late to clinch points for Francis

ST FRANCIS dug out a hard fought 3-4 victory over Pegasus/St James Athletic on Sunday with Derek Duggan’s late winner helping to keep them in with an outside chance of promotion from the LSL Senior 1B.

A somewhat slow start to the match was followed by an explosive ten-minute period in which Francis raced two goals in front.

Derek Duggan hit the winning score for St Francis.

Darren Goode found the back of the net with a sublime strike while David Simpson applied the finishing touch to a fine team move that helped put them well in control.

Indeed the Baldonnel side defended a corner and the ball was cleared to Goode and he tore down the left hand side before crossing a diagonal ball into the path of Simpson who met it with low strike to the target.

Pegasus did pull one back when Julian Jordan headed home from a free kick only to see Goode rattle the net again to send Francis in 3-1 up at the break.

Yet it was game-on again five minutes into the second half when Seamus King steered home for the homeside after which they levelled it through Conor McArdle with 12 minutes to go.

That scored force Francis on to the front foot and, with just five minutes remaining, defender Duggan fired home the winning score after a corner kick had dropped kindly for him.
