Dunne resigns from IABA High Performance post

BERNARD Dunne has officially stepped down from his post as the Irish Athletic Boxing Association’s High Performance Director.

The departure of the Clondalkin man brings to an end the uncertainty surrounding his position after Dunne went on extended leave following the Tokyo Olympics.

Relations between Dunne and IABA hierarchy had been strained after the Dubliner lodged an official complaint back in November regarding an unsigned SWOT Analysis Position Paper that he insisted had been critical of his performance and served to undermine his position.

Dunne, a WBA World Super Bantamweight title winner back in 2009, had taken up the IABA High Performance Director role back in 2017 as Irish boxing endured a difficult period in the wake of a disappointing return at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

Dunne’s decision to step away comes just ahead of major international tournaments, including the Women’s World Championships starting in Istanbul, Turkey on Friday and the Men’s European Championships running in Armenia from May 21-31.
