€2.5m allocated to complete works at Hazelhatch Bridge

THE allocation of €2.5m to complete the 12th Lock to Hazelhatch Bridge is very welcome news.

Dublin Mid West’s Fine Gael TD Emer Higgins welcomes the latest funding allocations for infrastructure projects under the National Development Plan 2021-2030.

“€2.5m has been allocated to extend the Grand Canal Greenway from the 12th Lock to Hazelhatch Bridge.

I’ve long been campaigning for the canal to be turned into a Greenway and despite a number of delays the project has the green light, is being re-tendered for and now we have this additional funding to make it happen,” stated Higgins.

“There is an assumption that Greenways, cycleways or walkways are primarily tourism amenities.

While they do enhance our local tourism offerings in Dublin, first and foremost they are about local people and improving local life, connecting suburbs, local villages or townlands that often become disconnected from one another because of busy and dangerous roads.

Being able to walk, run or cycle even more safely and more comfortably along the canal will be a real positive for residents in the area.

Once completed, this final 4km section will allow people to walk and cycle from Inchicore to Sallins through Clondalkin and Hazelhatch and enjoy this amenity for both locals and tourists,” said Higgins.
