€6.4m funding bonanza for sports clubs and groups

SPORTS and community groups have received a massive funding boost as a record total of over €6.4 million was provided in Sports Capital and equipment grants to groups in South Dublin.

The grants were announced last week, February 11, with an overall package of €150 million under the latest round of the Sports Capital and Equipment Programme

€144 million has been allocated to almost 1,900 applications with €6 million kept in reserve for successful appeals lodged by unsuccessful applicants. In South Dublin, a total of €6,475,741 was allocated to sports clubs and community groups in grants.

On a local level, Ballyboden St. Enda’s received a total of €150,000 for new ladies dressing rooms and Ballyboden Wanderers were allocated €150,000 for pitch drainage, walking track and a clubhouse upgrade. Templeogue United FC also received €150,000 for development of alterations to their clubhouse.

Our Lady’s School Terenure received €150,000 for a sports dome for hockey, while Knocklyon Community School received €139,675 for a gym extension and Terenure Sports Club received €150,000 for facility enhancements, including LED lights.

Kilnamanagh AFC received a grant of €150,000 for an indoor training facility and toilets, South Dublin County Council received €249,960 for the Kiltipper Soccer Pitch and Sacred Heart FC in Killinarden received €150,000 to resurface their all-weather pitch.

Speaking to The Echo following the announcement, Alan Gibbons, Sacred Heart FC club official said: “local schools and Foróige use the all-weather pitch, so it is great to get this funding. The committee are now working on plans for a new clubhouse and this funding is a huge benefit to the community.”

Shamrock Rovers Football Club welcomed the news of the awarding of a sport capital grant of €149,448 towards the installation of LED Floodlights on the grass pitches at the Academy facility at Roadstone.

In a statement the club said: “We have developed the Academy greatly over the last number of years and only recently opened our Indoor Astro and Gym in Roadstone. This latest development will further enhance the facility and give the club more room to develop areas of the football such as our Women’s section in the near future.”

Thomas Davis GAA received a total of €150,000 to re-carpet their existing all-weather pitch and Faughs GAA Club in Templeogue received €128,055 for the expansion of gym, fitness studio and related Facilities.

“We are delighted to get the funding for our all-weather facility,” said Thomas Davis club chairman Liam McGuigan. “We put in for it over a year ago and we now have the chance to raise the rest of the funds that will cover the cost of refurbishing the all-weather – that will be our goal.”

Rathcoole Community Council received a total of €135,000 for fire safety improvements in the Community Centre while St Francis Football Club received €150,000 for a 9-a-side Astro pitch and floodlights.

Garda GAA Club (Westmanstown Gaels) were allocated €150,000 for changing room facilities. Stewarts Care in Palmerstown received €139,785 for gym refurbishment and sports hall development.

Slade Valley Golf Club received a total of €141,925, which will go towards improvements to enhance accessibility and Stackstown Golf Club received €100,175 for the first green remodel, solar, upgrade Junior Academy and golf equipment.

Ballyfermot United Sports and Social Club also received €110,352 for floodlighting main Pitch and Training Area.

Speaking at the announcement, Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin, said: “Sport is crucial for all communities in Ireland. There was a record number of applications for these grants and the government responded with the most significant level of individual awards ever.

“So, this is a great day for sports clubs and community groups right around the country and I want to congratulate all of the successful applicants.”

As part of the Sports Capital Grants, the regional capital grants were also announced, with groups in South Dublin receiving a total of €2,454,837.

These included Dublin County Board GAA Spawell, who received €300,000 for Development at the Templeogue venue, Irish Girl Guides also received €300,000 for a health and wellness Facility.

The Irish Wheelchair Association, based in Walkinstown, received funding of €215,165 for sports and gym equipment. Peamount Utd. F.C were allocated €118,313 for a grass Pitch and facilities and Roadstone Group Social Club received €149,448 for the installation of LED floodlights on grass pitches.

Under the regional capital grants, South Dublin County Council received funding for several projects including €111,792 for Lucan Athletics track works and €233,512 for a water sports facility in Lucan.

They also received €249,960 for Killinarden GAA pitch and €249,960 for Kiltipper soccer pitch.
