Echo Sport in Review: April 2023

CLONDALKIN Rugby Football Club’s Women J1 team had plenty to shout about when they lifted the Paul Flood Plate title after seeing off Naas 19-12 in the decider in Carlow IT, being named The Echo Team of the Month for April as a result.

Jack Woolley beat current Olympic and World Champion, Vito Dell’Aquilla, for the first time at the Spanish Open, adding another world-ranking medal to his haul.

The Jobstown martial artist was added to the line up for The Echo Sports Star of the Year after picking up the April award as a result of his success in Spain.

Templeogue Swim Club’s Ellen Walshe highlighted the opening night of the Irish Open Swimming Championships with a new Irish senior record, breaking 59 seconds for the first time, with a 58.22 in the 100m Butterfly heats.

Walshe, an Olympian, then broke 58 seconds in the final to clock the eighth fastest time in the world this season in a blistering 57.96, again lowering the record.

After going unbeaten in the Dublin league with a record of 16-0, Dublin Lions successfully secured the U14 All-Ireland basketball title.

Lucan Harriers Carol Kearney was on top of the world with a brilliant performance at the World master’s Indoors in Torun, securing a silver and two bronze.

Liffey Celtics became the first-ever Women’s National Intermediate League champions, defeating Claregalway 65-52 in the inaugural final at the National Basketball Arena.

There was delight for Lucan Sarsfields camogie teams when they had plenty of success winning the Division One and Division Four Leinster League Camogie titles at the National GAA Centre in Abbotstown.

Ballyboden St Enda’s donned the Sarcoma Cancer Ireland logo for a one-off jersey, which was later auctioned off in a fundraiser, as they played St Sylvester’s in the Adult Football League Division One.

Dublin secured passage back to the big time after securing promotion and easing to a seven-point win over Derry, with Templeogue Synge Street lads Killian O’Gara and Lorcan O’Dell netting, in the NFL Division Two Final.

Ivan Bondarchuk (12),who fled his home in Ukraine following the Russian invasion and the subsequent war, won international gold medals after training in St Mark’s Taekwon-do School.

Éanna Basketball Club’s Adam Charles played his part as Ireland Under 16s were crowned Four Nations Champions after a pulsating 89-84 win over defending champions England at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght.

Defending Formula Vee champion and 2023 series leader Anthony Cross made it two wins from two starts after taking victory in the second round of the Selco.ie championship at Mondello Park.

Representing University of Texas, Rhasidat Adeleke broke her own Irish 200m record with a 22.34 at the Tom Jones Memorial meeting and 24-hours later, became the first Irish woman to break the 50-second barrier in the 400m, clocking 49.90.

At the Dublin Ladies Football Féile, Thomas Davis beat St Jude’s to the Division Three crown while St Finian’s, Templeogue Synge Street and St Patrick’s Palmerstown won their respective titles.

In camogie, St Mark’s GAA won the Division Five féile while Lucan Sarsfields claimed the Division One award.

Killinarden Community School made history when they secured the Under 17 Leinster Football Schools title after seeing off Coláiste na Mi from Navan to win their first ever provincial crown.

Clondalkin man Louis O’Loughlin was a key member of the Auburn Tigers team that won the College Men’s Distance Medley Relay at the 127th edition of the Penn Relays Meet at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.
