THE procurement process for the construction of an extension to Tallaght University Hospital’s (TUH) Intensive Care Unit is expected to commence in the third quarter of this year, according to the CEO of the Dublin Midlands Hospital Group.

As previously reported in The Echo, the hospital lodged an application for planning permission for an extension to the ICU in December 2017 and were granted planning permission the following February.

Plans for the extension to contain 12 isolation bedrooms, a public waiting area, an overnight area and staff areas were included in the application.

The submission also contained plans for the extension to be located on the roof of the existing ground floor outpatients’ department, with the existing roof finishes to be removed.

There are plans for the extension to connect to the existing ICU at two locations, to an existing circulation route in one location and to the existing hospital street at the other location.

There will be no second-floor accommodation with the exception of an open-air plant, a screened plant and associated services with access for maintenance staff.

Fianna Fail councillor for Tallaght Central, Charlie O’Connor, requested an update in relation to these plans at Tuesday’s meeting of the Mid-Leinster Regional Health Forum.

In response, Trevor O’Callaghan, the CEO of the Dublin Midlands Hospital Group, stated that the project is currently at the design stage and, subject to full HSE funding, it is anticipated that the procurement process for the construction of the extension will commence in the third quarter of this year.
