Fantastic footwork from Smash It Dance Academy

A dance academy will be celebrating 10 years of activity while its students brought home nearly 100 trophies this year.

Smash It Dance Academy based in Tymon North was founded by local woman Nadia Wilson, who opened it right after she finished school in September 2015.

One hundred and ten students come through the school doors weekly taking classes in Hip Hop, Acro, Lyrical, and Musical Theatre, with the youngest being only two-and-a-half years old and the oldest being 22.

Since March, 28 Smash It Dancers brought home 93 trophies over three hip-hop competitions, a “huge achievement,” that made them and Nadia proud.

“First, we attended the SOAR British championship in Manchester in March, winning five British Champion titles and 25 trophies,” she explained.

“In April we went to the Street Dance Ireland event in North Dublin where all of our five teams placed first.”

The third competition was local, in the Tallaght Basketball Arena, where the Smash It Under16 came first, and the younger teams were all in the top 3 of their categories.

A number of students also won and placed at the top in their solos and doubles competitions at these events.

“We are delighted, these kids have worked immensely hard for where they are today, and they are continuing to build confidence,” said Nadia.

“We look forward to all the training and events coming our way.”

The school are now working towards their annual show in Kilnamanagh Community Centre, which will take place on July 12 and 13.

The community around the school offer them support with fundraisers, music and bingo nights, explained Nadia.

“The school is a great outlet for these kids, something to do in their area.

“They’ve been working on the July show for the whole year, it will be a chance to get on stage and have fun, showing off their skills.”
