A LOCAL fire fighter and advanced paramedic in the Dublin Fire Brigade has bid farewell after 20 years.

Fire fighter Ray Carney from Palmerstown has worked in Dublin Fire Brigade for 20 years and at Tallaght Fire Station since 2007, but recently said goodbye to take up a new position.

“I have left to take up a position with another organisation, the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council so it’s not a proper retirement, I am not going off sailing into the sunset or to live in Portugal or anything like that”, Ray joked.

“It’s a moving on rather than a retirement, I still have to work. I was almost 20 years in Dublin Fire Brigade. I was based in D watch in Tallaght Fire station.

“It was fantastic, it was a great organisation and it’s something I really enjoyed. You are serving the public both from the fire side and also the ambulance and there has been loads of very positive experiences over the years, tragedy also. You come face to face with it, it’s part of the job.

“I was involved in EMS education for many years in Dublin Fire Brigade, and I enjoyed that aspect of it which mainly involved teaching paramedic training to newer staff. I enjoyed the education part of the job as well.

“Most importantly, I had a great bunch of colleagues in D Watch in Tallaght and throughout the Fire Brigade and it was a great environment to work in, I thoroughly enjoyed every day of the 20 years.”
