Fire station assessment report completed and submitted
A STRATEGIC Assessment Report and Business Case for the development of a new fire station to serve the West Dublin catchment area have been completed and submitted to the National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management.
Preliminary capital funding has been approved for the new fire station to serve Adamstown and Clonburris, as outlined in a report received by Dublin Fire Brigade.
DFB continue to engage with South Dublin County Council in relation to the project, which has led to the selection of a preferred site for the station, located within the Clonburris SDZ on Thomas Omer Way.
SDCC stated in a reply to Councillor Daniel Loftus at this month’s Council meeting that the site is “currently undergoing valuation as part of the acquisition process with the landowner.”
Furthermore, the Council clarified that DFB is in the process of preparing for a pre-planning consultation with the SDCC Planning Department to inform the next stage of the project, including consideration of site access and traffic-related matters.
“Subject to completion of the site acquisition process, DFB intends to tender for an architect-led design team and project manager later this year to advance the detailed design, statutory approvals and delivery of the proposed fire station.”
Previously, the Adamstown SDZ Planning Scheme identified a potential site for a fire station in the north-eastern sector of the scheme area, north of Tandy’s Lane Park and south of the residential area of Somerton Woods.
However, following the 2024 amendment of the Planning Scheme, Section 2.6.42 provides that, should Dublin Fire Brigade and the Planning Authority determine that the site is not required for a fire station, it may be developed for residential purposes in accordance with the Planning Scheme.
The Clonburris SDZ Planning Scheme identifies “the requirement for fire station provision but does not prescribe a fixed location, allowing flexibility to identify the most suitable site having regard to operational requirements, site suitability, land ownership and the relevant statutory processes.”
Earlier this year, it was announced that €16.4 million was allocated for the Clonburris fire station project as part of €328.5m Fire Services Capital Programme (2026–2030), the largest-ever investment in fire and emergency services in the history of the State.
South Dublin County Council confirmed that engagement will continue with Dublin Fire Brigade as the project progresses through site acquisition, design development and the planning process.
