Five-storey nursing home plans for Priory ground

A SITE notice outlining plans for the construction of a five-storey nursing home and older person independent living units in the grounds of St Mary’s Priory in Tallaght was erected last week.

The planned development is being proposed by St Mary’s Medical (Tallaght) Ltd, a company which was set up in October 2020 with a registered address in Broadmeadows, Swords.

The directors of St Mary’s Medical (Tallaght) are Shane Slevin and Lisa McDonald. Mr Slevin is also the director of a company that constructs commercial buildings, called L&S Structures Limited.

As reported in The Echo last September, lands adjoining the Priory went on the market with a guide price of €5m.

Owned by the Dominican Fathers before the sale, the 2.46-acre pocket of land which backs onto the TU Dublin – Tallaght Campus on the Old Greenhills Road-side of Tallaght Village, was sold as a ‘prime residential development site’.

Last Friday, May 21, a site notice was erected at the site, detailing plans for a five-storey nursing home development with 112 en suite bedrooms, a day centre and a pharmacy.

It is proposed that 108 one-bedroom/two-person independent living units for older people and five guest bedrooms will be housed in a part-five/part-six storey building.

According to the site notice, each unit will be provided with private open spaces in the form of balconies and terraces.

Provision of 30 car parking spaces and 86 bicycle parking spaces is included, while access to the development is to be provided by a new pedestrian and vehicular access point from Old Greenhills Road, through an existing boundary wall.

A decision on the application has not yet been made by South Dublin County Council.

The Dominicans first came to Tallaght in 1856, and over the decades their centre in Tallaght Village has grown to include the Priory Institute.

The adjoining lands are also home to the Tallaght Retreat and Conference Centre, which offers retreats and courses for people in the Tallaght area and further afield.

Also on campus is St Catherine’s Counselling Centre, where the Dominicans offer individual counselling and psychotherapy for adults, children and families.

The priory also has pastoral responsibility for the parishes of St Aengus’, St Dominic’s and St Mary’s.
