Frances Fitzgerald confirms she will not run for leader of Fine Gael

Dublin Mid West TD, Minister for Justice and Tanaiste, Frances Fitzgerald has confirmed this morning that she will not contest the Fine Gael leadership race.

Enda Kenny announced his resignation as party leader yesterday evening, and Minister Fitzgerald said she has seriously considered running for leader, but has decided that entering the contest would not be the right decision for her.

In her statement released this morning she said: “I have seriously considered contesting the leadership election which is now underway in the Fine Gael party.

“I have been touched by the encouragement and support I have received. But I have decided that entering the contest is not the right decision for me.

“I look forward to the campaign and the bright future ahead for Fine Gael.”
