Free community health talks: Menopause, Mindfulness, Sepsis and Endometriosis

A SERIES of free community-based health talks by leading experts are taking place in Tallaght Library during October.

Run in partnership by Tallaght University Hospital (TUH) and the Fettercairn Community Health Project, the talks cover menopause, stress management, recognising sepsis and lastly, endometriosis.

All are welcome to attend the free talks, which are being held in support of October Health Awareness Month.

The first talk in the series will be held at 6pm on October 4 and is based on ‘how to eat well and exercise during the menopause’.

This presentation will be made by dietician Sarah Gill and physiotherapist Eimear Lee Moloney, both of whom work as part of the Women’s Health Team at TUH.

At 2pm on Tuesday, October 12, the second talk will be delivered by Professor Brendan Kelly and will focus on how mindfulness can be used to help manage stress, as well as anxiety and depression.

Prof Brendan Kelly, Consultant Psychiatrist at TUH and Professor of Psychiatry at Trinity College Dublin, will deliver a community talk on ‘Mindfulness’

Dr Kelly will discuss how mindfulness works and the most accessible ways to reduce stress, anxiety and depression. 

How the public can recognise sepsis early in a loved one, along with preventing sepsis in the first place, is the third talk scheduled for Thursday, October 12 at 11am.

This interactive talk will be delivered by Dr Sarmad Waqas, a Consultant Physician and specialist in infectious diseases, along with his colleague and specialist sepsis nurse, Deepthi Chakkittakandy.

The final talk will be held on Tuesday, October 24, at 6pm and covers what endometriosis is and how it can be treated.

Rebecca McEvoy, a Clinical Nurse Manager with specialist training in endometriosis along with her colleague Sarah Dineen, a Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist in pelvic health, will lead the final talk.

Tallaght Library will the location for all talks in the series. Lucy Nugent, CEO of TUH, said: “I hope many of our community will be able to attend these valuable talks with leading experts.

“They enable TUH to truly become a hospital without walls, extending our reach into the local community, not just for treatment but also health awareness and prevention.

“There is no admission charge, and all are welcome.”

This series of talks is run in partnership with the Fettercairn Community Health Project.

The project’s co-ordinator, Samantha Griffin said: “We are delighted to once again with the support of the lectures run by TUH to mark October Health Awareness Month.

“They are a very welcome addition to our calendar because as we all know when it comes to any illness, prevention is better than cure.”
