Funding boost for Civic and Rua Red

Fianna Fáil TD for Dublin South West, John Lahart, has welcomed €240,000 in Arts Council funding for the Civic Theatre in Tallaght and €43,000 in funding for Rua Red, reports Thomas Cox.

The government agency for funding and developing the arts said that while the sector was suffering disproportionately during the health crisis, hundreds of artists and practitioners were planning and already making great art for the public to experience in the months ahead.

The Civic Theatre has had to go virtual for many of its events recently. Over the past year, projects such as ‘Play Apart’, which was part of the Cruinniú na nÓg online celebrations, and involved short performances created over Zoom with scripts written by young writers have been successful in drawing virtual audiences.

Rua Red has also continued to host daily events including discussions, art classes and other online workshops.

Following the announcement, Deputy Lahart commented: “This has been an extremely challenging year for artists, it’s vital that the sector continues to receive the support it requires to ensure that the core infrastructure of the arts landscape survives the most challenging period it has ever faced.

“The pandemic has highlighted just how important the arts are to all our lives. Today’s funding will go some way towards helping the sector to sustain artists and organisations severely impacted by Covid-19,” he concluded.
