Fusion Twirlers: Awarded second place at Twirling Championships

Practising in Fettercairn and Cookstown four days a week, the Fusion Twirlers has been awarded second place in the top club division of the National Baton Twirling Sport Association of Ireland Championship, reports Merle van Erve.

Laura Molloy, who is from Jobstown, is one of the coaches at Fusion. Together with Janis, Michelle and Sonya she coaches over 50 children in Baton Twirling.

After much coaching and even more practising the children competed against 13 clubs in the National Indoor Arena Dublin and won their place in the National Baton Twirling Sport Association of Ireland Championship.

Emily Delaney, Robyn Mahady and Mia Brady even won their places in the top three of the Top Twirler Categories.

By being awarded second place, they qualified for the European Championship in Blanes, Spain with 12 athletes travelling to Spain to represent Ireland in July this year.

“We were ecstatic. It was a huge accomplishment for us. A lot of time and work had been put in to achieve this so it was surreal to finally see all the work pay off,’’ said Laura.

Having to compete against countries from all over the EU, such as The Netherlands, Slovenia, France and Italy, Laura expects the European Championship to be tough.

“Between now and the European Championships we will attend small local competitions and develop our athlete’s twirling ability,’’ explained Laura.
