Garda Supt leaves Tallaght for new role in Clondalkin

THE superintendent of Tallaght Garda Station, Tomas Gormley, will be leaving at the end of this week to take up a new role as a detective superintendent at Clondalkin Garda Station.

Supt Gormley began his role in Tallaght Garda Station last October and oversaw a robust policing response to ongoing issues with anti-social behaviour on bus routes in West Tallaght during his tenure.

He was also involved in introducing Operation Hybrid, which tackles organised crime, and developing the station’s response to and raising awareness of domestic violence.

Reflecting on his eight months in the role, Supt Gormley told The Echo: “I’ve had a great time, met some great people and worked with some great people.

“It’s been very productive and very satisfying, and I got great support from local community representatives.

“There is a very good relationship between the community and the guards here.

“The community engagement was new to me, and I never would’ve realised how valuable it is from a crime prevention, investigation and detection standpoint and how big the community’s input is.

“We depend on the community, and they depend on us.”

Supt Gormley’s new role marks the continuation of his more than 26 years’ service in An Garda Síochána.

He began his career in Rathmines, and in 2008 he was promoted to sergeant and served in Store Street, followed by being a community policing sergeant in Harcourt Terrace.

In 2012, Supt Gormley began working in the assistant garda commissioner’s office as a sergeant, and in 2018 he was promoted to the role of detective inspector and returned to Store Street.

Following on from his stint as superintendent in Tallaght Garda Station, Supt Gormley is looking forward to getting back into detective work in Clondalkin as the next stage in his career.

“I’ll be specialising in serious crime investigations, and it will be a more focused role,” he explained.

Detective Inspector Bronagh O’Reilly from Finglas Garda Station has been appointed the new superintendent of Tallaght Garda Station and will commence her new role next week.

“The district is in very good hands with her,” added Supt Gormley. “She’s very experienced and has dealt with a lot of serious crime.”
