Gardai investigate fatal incident of 50-year-old on Robinhood Road

GARDAI are investigating a fatal incident that occurred on Robinhood Road in Clondalkin last Sunday evening, January 23.

At approximately 6.15pm, 50-year-old Ian McDonnell was found lying on the roadway with serious life-threatening injuries.

Investigations carried out by Clondalkin Gardai have established that Mr McDonnell had attended his business premises, locally, a short time earlier.  While present he intervened to prevent the theft of his car, a grey coloured Volkswagen Passat, registration number 161 OY 1861.

In doing so he was carried on the bonnet of his vehicle, a distance, to where he was discovered.

Ian McDonnell was removed from the scene by ambulance to Tallaght University Hospital in a serious condition. Ian McDonnell has passed away Friday evening, January 28.

A garda statement released this lunch time said: “An Garda Síochána at Ballyfermot investigating this incident established an investigation team under a Senior Investigating Officer on the 23rd January, 2022.

“Significant progress has been made to date in the investigation including interviewing of witnesses, door-to-door enquiries and harvesting of CCTV images”.

The grey coloured Volkswagen Passat, registration number 161 OY 1861, which left the scene and was located on Limekiln Green, Greenhills, Dublin 12, on Friday, January 28.  This vehicle has been recovered to be forensically examined.

 

A second vehicle involved in the incident, a silver coloured Toyota Aqua, registration number 152 D 32687, which was stolen in Crumlin on the afternoon of Sunday, January, 23 and was located burnt out in Ballinascorney, Tallaght on Tuesday, January 25. This vehicle has been recovered to be forensically examined.

Gardaí in Clondalkin are seeking the public’s assistance for the following information:

Gardaí are anxious to hear from anyone who may have been in the Robinhood Road area of Clondalkin on the evening of Sunday, January 23 between 5.30pm and 7pm and who may have witnessed any activity which drew their attention or who may have any video dash cam footage.

The grey coloured Volkswagen Passat 161 OY 1861 stolen at the incident on January 23 has been recovered on Limekiln Green, Greenhills, Dublin 12, on Friday, January 28.  Where was that vehicle between Sunday, January 23 and Friday, January 28?

The silver coloured Toyota Aqua was stolen in Crumlin on the afternoon of Sunday, January, 23 and was located burnt out in Ballinascorney, Tallaght on Tuesday 25. Where was that vehicle between Sunday, January 23 and Tuesday, January 25?

Investigating Gardaí are looking for any information on where either car was parked up at any location, or was either vehicle seen in any petrol station or at any other location over those days?

Investigating Gardaí are also seeking assistance from anyone who may have seen either of the cars in the vicinity of Ballymount, Walkinstown, Tallaght, Kylemore Road, or Ballyfermot between 6.30pm and 9pm on Sunday night January 23.

A family liaison officer has been appointed to Ian’s family and our sympathies go to his wife, children and extended family and friends at this time.

A post-mortem will be carried out today.
