Get Clondalkin reading!

A NEW initiative to get Clondalkin reading was launched last week in Clondalkin Library on World Book Day.

The One Book, One Community initiative invites people in Clondalkin to read the book One by Sarah Crossan.

The launch featured a number of students reading excerpts from the book, which is an award-winning book about a set of teenage conjoined twins that’s aimed at young adults.

Pupils from a number of Clondalkin schools attended the launch, including Collinstown Park Community College, St Kevin’s Community College, Coláiste Chillian and St Joseph’s Boys National School, and other members of the community also attended including a book club for retired women that’s based in Clondalkin Library.

Breda Deegan, Home Economics teacher and literacy coordinator in Coláiste Bríde, told The Echo that the initiative is “about creating links with students in the school, with the community and with their families.

“A lot people are already reading the book, people’s sisters and mams, and then they’re passing it on to their friends.”

Ms Deegan added: “The students are thrilled with themselves for finishing the book.”

The initiative will conclude with a visit to the school by the book’s author, Sarah Crossan, later this month.

Ms Deegan said that the students are very excited about Ms Crossan’s visit, and they can’t wait for her to come to the school.

Everyone in the community is invited to get involved in the initiative, and more details are available on Twitter at @oneinclondalkin and Facebook at facebook.com/oneinclondalkin
