GomBean: Niamh McGrath brings her comedic show to The Civic

A ctor, director and playwright Niamh McGrath will be bringing her comedic show ‘GomBean’ to the Civic Theatre stage from February 9 to February 11.

‘GomBean’ is set in a small town in Sligo and sees two worlds collide as coffee van owner Grace O’Reilly’s former wrestling rival Ruby Stephens is unexpectedly in town.

The two women have unfinished business, as Grace is determined to win back the wrestling title that Ruby won after defeating her in the U18s Community Games in 1994.

Niamh McGrath wrote ‘GomBean’ and will perform the one-woman show for three evenings in the Civic Theatre next month.

‘GomBean’ has been performed in theatres across the length and breadth of the country, and Niamh is certain that any people who attend her show will be in for a treat.

“Audiences have been so fantastic – it seems my timing is perfect for a comedy!” Niamh told The Echo.

“There’s been lots of laughter belting around the theatres and I’m beyond delighted to receive standing ovations.

“The feedback has been amazing on social media. I’ve had people come to ‘GomBean’ that have never been to a show before and that, to me, is just gold and such a privilege!”

The show is an hour long and is suitable for ages 15 and up, and Niamh is enthusiastic about the unique and comedic atmosphere that ‘GomBean’ conjures up for audiences.

“It’s a show about a small town in the west of Ireland where everyone knows each other’s business, but with a fresh take on some quirky characters and motivations,” she explained.

“How many plays have you seen recently that mixed sour milky lattes and hardcore wrestling?”

‘GomBean’ is on in the Civic Theatre at 8.15pm on February 9, 10 and 11, with tickets costing €17 each or €15 concession.
