Greenhills Community College has strong links with the Student Enterprise Awards

By Mary Dennehy

YOUNG entrepreneurs from Greenhills Community College are hoping to light up this year’s competitive Student Enterprise Awards with their innovative businesses.

The start-your-own-business competition has strong roots in South Dublin County, with hundreds of young people engaging with the competition – which is run regionally by the Local Enterprise Office [LEO] South Dublin, in partnership with IT Tallaght.

One of the schools taking part is Greenhills Community College, which this year has two budding businesses hoping to catch the attention of judges at the upcoming regional final in March – the winners of which, will represent the county at the national finals.

First up is Third-year student Eoin Keogh who, no stranger to the competition, has continued to grow his anti-bullying business to this year include mini-keyring torches which are branded with the slogan, ‘Bullying not such a bright idea’.

Eoin previously won an award for his anti-bulling pens which had ‘Write off bullying’ printed on them.

Second-year students Sean Flood and Paul McCardle have also entered a viable business into the competition and have creatively handmade their own brand of scented soap called Play Soap – an idea which taps into a product that is always in demand across both domestic and gift markets.

Business teacher Maria Donoghue told The Echo: “Greenhills has a strong tradition with the competition and enterprise is a key feature of the school – with an after-school club on business running.

“Business is a life skill and taking part in enterprise from a young age helps to build confidence, it encourages young people to stand on their own two feet and to have conviction in their ideas.

“The competition also shows young people the many different dimensions to business and shows them how to work through their business idea, create a business plan and bring their idea to market.”

She added: “The school is really looking forwared to the regional final on March 4 and we’re all behind the two teams.”
