Hairdresser Donna ‘loved to chat’ and was a stalwart at GAA Club
A STALWART of Thomas Davis GAA Club, Donna Owens, has been remembered as a slick hairdresser who “loved to chat”, stylish, and skilful on the pitch following her death.
Donna Owens, nee McGinty, died unexpectedly but peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Thursday, April 20.
The mother of two children, Kerri and Leon, was laid to rest in Bohernabreena Cemetery following funeral mass in St Martin de Porres Church on Monday.
Mourners at the funeral mass for Donna heard how she “hated school and couldn’t wait to become a hairdresser” as crossword puzzles and a scissors and brush were brought to the alter as gifts.
One of Donna’s bags and a pair of her shoes were also brought up as gifts, recognising her love of fashion and “lotions and potions she used”.
The Old Bawn native was remembered as someone who “could very well have been a model when you see how beautiful she was”.
A family photograph was also one of the gifts, with Donna being a proud mam who adored her children.
Thomas Davis and Dublin GAA jerseys were brought to the alter to represent her children Kerri and Leon following in her footsteps of playing for and following both club and county.
Members of the Thomas Davis under 15 boys and senior ladies football team, and Dublin senior ladies footballers formed a guard of honour in the church while members of St Anne’s formed a guard of honour along the route to Bohernabreena Cemetery.
Donna comes from a strong gaelic games family, with her father Christy an excellent footballer from Mayo, her late mother Mary coming from Donegal and late brother-in-law reigning from Tyrone.
On match days, with all the family coming from different parts of the country but living in Dublin, the “craic was mighty”.
Alongside her two sisters Carmel and Christina, Donna played for the first ladies football in The Little Village and had great footballing ability, earning a place on the Dublin junior ladies football team.
Donna’s daughter Kerri followed in her footsteps in playing for Davis’, and is currently part of the Dublin senior panel.
In 2006, Donna married her partner Jimmy Owens, which was well attended by all of her Thomas Davis family.
A keen hairdresser, Donna worked in various salons across south Dublin and her clientele followed her where she moved, only trusting her to cut their hair and loving the chats.
Donna Owens is survived by her husband Jimmy, their children Kerri and Leon, father Christy, sisters Carmel and Christina, brother Joey and extended family and friends.
