Healthcare Innovation Challenge for students
FIVE teams came out on top at the annual Healthcare Innovation Challenge held at TU Dublin Tallaght campus last weekend.
The event now in its fifth year saw over 80 students work in teams over a period of 24 hours to deliver prototypes and posters outlining their approach to solving one of six challenges laid out by clinicians from Tallaght University Hospital.
The students received briefings directly from the clinicians as well and, through this, gained first-hand insights into pressing healthcare issues.
Amazon experts also delivered technical presentations on pitching and prototyping, equipping participants with the tools to develop impactful solutions.
TUH Head of innovation Dr Natalie Cole stated that “the standard of ideas presented was exceptional.”
Dr Cole said: “The Healthcare Innovation Challenge continues to demonstrate the incredible value of bringing healthcare professionals and students together to solve real-world problems.
“This year, colleagues from across the Hospital set six challenges, giving students the opportunity to apply their developing skills, knowledge and creativity to issues that matter to patients, staff and services every day.
“The standard of ideas presented was exceptional. It is always inspiring to see how students approach challenges with fresh perspectives, innovative thinking and practical solutions.
“The experience not only supports their learning and professional development, but also helps us to explore new ways of improving healthcare.”
Five prizes were given out at the end of the event, recognising the work that several teams had done.
The awards include; Best Future Solution was awarded for digitalisation of patient screening form, Most Innovative Solution for finding the missing canisters, Best Use of Technology for smarter equipment tracking for better patient care, Greatest Patient Benefit, awarded also for digitalisation of patient screening form and Best Overall Project given out for real-time medical multilingual speech translation.
“As we mark Innovation Week in the Hospital, we are delighted to welcome the students in to showcase their proposed solutions to colleagues.
“Their enthusiasm, ingenuity and willingness to tackle complex healthcare challenges highlight the importance of collaboration between healthcare, education and industry partners, and give us great optimism for the future.”
