Hosts needed for tourist-related events

SOUTH Dublin County Council is seeking applications from parties interested in hosting tourism-related events in the Lucan and Palmerstown-Fonthill areas in 2020.
The Tourism Events and Festivals Grant Scheme for 2020, which was launched in early February, will hope to build on two local events in 2019 that attracted plenty of tourists – the Liffey Descent and the Esker All Female BoxCup – reportedly the largest female-only boxing tournament worldwide in 2019.

Councillor Shane Moynihan (FF) asked the council for information on tourism events that will be supported in the Lucan and Palmerstown-Fonthill electoral areas for the year 2020.
In response, the council referenced the South Dublin County Tourism Strategy and a grant scheme, that provides funding available to businesses and community groups across the county to support “key priority areas such as cultural, food, sports and activity-based tourism aimed at growing the visitor economy.”
“The aim is to fund innovative events/festivals that will be supported by local businesses and communities and which will add value to our tourism product,” the council said.
The 60th annual Liffey Descent in September attracted almost 260 out of county and over 110 international visitors to the area, according to the council.
The Esker All Female BoxCup event, brought 736 out of county and 480 out of country visitors from 19 countries, and three continents to the electoral area.
The council say they have received a number of additional expressions of interest from organisations who wish to host events in the Lucan and Palmerstown-Fonthill electoral area for 2020.
Closing date for receipt of applications is 3pm on Friday, April 24.
