Housing and homeless crisis linked to insufficient support
THE housing and homelessness crisis is “inextricably linked” to insufficient support services and refuge spaces, according to new research by Saoirse Domestic Violence Services.
The support group for women and children experiencing domestic violence and abuse, will launch its new research on June 5 at the Orchard Community Centre in Cherry Orchard.
The research study ‘Unveiling the Shadows: Dynamics of Domestic Violence and Abuse in Dublin 10’ reveals stark findings the group say are “unsurprising” but emphasises “the need for improved housing policies.”
Its authors also note the legislative barriers and legal and judicial inefficiencies and complexities which present barriers to justice for victims.
The research gives voice to victims and survivors of domestic violence and abuse, examining their experiences of living with and escaping abuse.
Alison Graham, CEO of Saoirse Domestic Violence Services, said: “As the CEO of Saoirse Domestic Violence Services, I am proud to support this vital research in Dublin 10. Understanding the prevalence of domestic violence in our community is essential for developing effective interventions and providing the necessary support to those affected. This study represents a significant step towards creating a safer and more compassionate environment for everyone.”
Recommendations in the report include comprehensive training across all sectors interacting with victims of abuse.
It also calls for an expansion of legal and judicial support, improved data collection and classification, advocating for policy changes and strengthening support services.
Saoirse believes that investing in research such as this, can deepen their understanding of the “myriad reforms that are needed to truly combat domestic violence and abuse” and ensure more “effective prevention strategies and responses are implemented at both the government and community level.”
Publication of the research will coincide with the launch of Saoirse’s new community space in The Orchard Community Centre, where a dedicated Outreach Support Worker can offer support for women and children in the Dublin 10 area.
