Hyland gets back on the title trail

PATRICK Hyland has been handed another title shot after it was announced this week that he will face Josh Warrington for the English man’s WBC Inter-national Featherweight title in the First Direct Arena in Leeds on July 30.

Live on Sky Sports, this bout will mark Hyland’s first return to the ring since his loss to defending WBC World Featherweight champion Gary Russell Jr in Connecticut back in April.

Delighted at the prospect of fighting for another major title so soon after his disappointment in the US, Hyland believes next month’s clash with the unbeaten Warrington could prove a real gripping contest for the fans.

“This fight has been on the cards for a while and I’m really looking forward to it” Hyland told The Echo.

“It took a loss for me to get the fight, but I’m looking forward to it even more than I was the Russell fight.

“I feel this is shaping up to be the fight of the year in British boxing. The two of us going toe-to-toe in the middle of the ring.

“He [Warrington] is a good boxer with a good engine and likes to go forward. I like to go forward too, so it’s gonna be a great one for the fans.

“If he wants to be fighting for world titles and against world champions he has get through the likes of me and I could be a real banana skin for him.

“I was a bit down after the Russell fight and it’s great to get this opportunity so soon- to fight for an international title that could get me another world title shot.

“It’s gonna be another six and a half weeks of pushing my body to the limit, but this is what I love and I’m gonna grab this chance with both hands. I’ll be coming home with that WBC International Featherweight title” he insisted.

Promoter Eddie Hearn also feels this title bout could have it all saying “Warrington vs Hyland is a fight that we’ve looked to make in the past and it’s a real crossroads clash.

“Patrick has only had two defeats both in World title challenges, while Josh is set for his first shot at a World crown later this year – victory for both men on July 30 is vital.”
