Ireland make winning start in Pinatar Cup

LOUISE Quinn fired home a 75th-minute winner for the Republic of Ireland senior women’s team as they battled back from behind to beat Poland 2-1 in their opening match of the Pinatar Cup in Spain.

Vera Pauw’s side had found themselves playing catch-up early in the second half when Paulina Dudek converted a penalty after Niamh Fahey was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box.

Yet Ireland were back on level terms seven minutes later when Lucy Quinn unleashed a long-range drive with the left boot to the back of the net.

And after chances fell both ways, Louise Quinn combined with Tallaght’s Katie McCabe to edge Ireland in front – the former Peamount United captain getting her head to a delivery in from the national team skipper to make it 2-1.

Saturday will see Ireland back out in action in this tournament which is providing the players with some timely preparation for their upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifier against Sweden in April.
