“It’s too early to be pressing the panic button”- Shaw
SHAMROCK Rovers striker Gary Shaw insists it is too early to be panicking despite the Hoops going five games without a win.
Having picked up just one point in their past four Premier Division games (that coming against Limerick at home on Friday) and suffering an exit from the EA Sports Cup at the hands of Longford Town on Tuesday, Rovers are in need of a swift turnaround.
And the players will get an opportunity to make such a much needed statement when they travel to fourth place Derry City today, Friday, before welcoming defending champions Cork City to Tallaght on Monday.
“Some people are pressing the panic button and it’s too early to be doing that,” Shaw told The Echo.
“We’re 12 or 13 games into the season and there’s a lot more to be played and a lot more points to be won.
“And if you look at it, Cork have to play Dundalk and then we play them. We could end up just five points behind them.
“Derry is always a tough place to go. They had a poor start to the season but they’ve turned it around with great results, particularly at home.
“We beat them 6-1 earlier in the season and that will be in the back of their heads.
“It will be a long journey up there, but if we can get the win it will be a very quick one back home,” he stressed.
Shaw is adamant that that the team can turn it around saying “There’s no negative vibe there.
“The manager has brought in all these players and he’s fully behind them and we’re fully behind him and in what he’s trying to do.
“These results are terribly frustrating, but we’re in this together and we’re fully focused on what we have to do. We’ve just hit a sticky patch and one win could change it all. We’re not panicking. We just need that bit of luck.
“Against Bohs it was just poor game management, against Limerick we should have won. We should have been putting three or four goals past them. That’s what we’ve got to be doing against these teams.
“Sometimes the ball falls right for you and sometimes it doesn’t, but the next two games are massive for us and the players have to stand up and be counted. The team needs a win. The football club needs a win.
“Cork came to us last season and we beat them and I feel we’re well capable of beating them again,” he said.
