Residents in the community have helped out with funeral arrangements – with Jackie’s Florist making a special wreath and cards for people to say their farewell to John.

The flat-cap-wearing “man with a brush and cigarette” was a familiar figure in the community, according to Walkinstown resident John Maguire.

Mr Maguire said: “He was well known in the area and a real character. John walked absolutely everywhere. He was terribly polite and there was no badness in him.

“I don’t think he was allowed go to school. There would be more support services for people nowadays. But in later years people helped him to get his pension, and he stayed in sheltered accommodation with St John of Gods.”

Tributes flowed in from the community with residents praising “everyone’s friend” and “one of nature’s gentlemen.”

John was son of the late Mary and Christopher, late brother Joseph, and leaves behind by his brother Cornelius, sister Anna, extended family, staff and friends in St John of Gods, Islandbridge, and the communities of Ballyfermot, Clondalkin, Inchiore, and Tallaght.

The funeral service will take place at 10am on Tuesday, March 14, at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Ballyfermot.
