Joy for Conor on University Challenge
A LUCAN man was part of a four-man team that won the final of the BBC’s University Challenge on Monday night.
Conor McMeel, 26, was on the team for Imperial College London, where he is studying for a PhD in computer science, and as the final of the well-known and iconic quiz show was filmed in advance, Mr McMeel watched it from his parents’ home in Lucan this week.

The Imperial College London team, including Brandon Blackwell, Richard Brooks and Caleb Rich, were up against students from Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, where their intellectual mettle was tested by veteran quizmaster and former BBC Newsnight presenter Jeremy Paxman.
Being selected by his university to go on the show was no mean feat, as Mr McMeel had to sit a written exam, where the number of candidates was whittled down to between 20 and 30 students, before having to take part in quizzes which ultimately led to the selection of the top four contestants.
The winning team were presented their trophy by Professor Andrew Wiles, a mathematician at the University of Oxford, who is best known for proving Fermat’s Last Theorem.
