Letters: ‘Tallaght is the victim of blatant discrimination’

Dear Editor,

Although holiday-time reports in the media over last weekend highlighted the huge injustices existing in Irish society, it showed typical examples of why we have a very unequal society:

1) Headline: “Reilly defends his objection to plan for 151 new homes. Former minister says his constituents want fewer houses built.”

He said they are not against new houses but the density, i.e. 151 new homes.

2) “Locals to take legal action over ‘homeless hub’ in their area.”

Plans were already under way to move 13 families into a former B&B on St Lawrence Road, Clontarf, despite an outcry from locals.

A residents’ committee is asking their neighbours to raise €70,000 to meet legal fees. They have so far collected €20,000. Some residents have committed between €1,000 and €5,000.

3) Then we have Minister Shane Ross protesting over a proposal to build 60 apartments in Mt. Merrion that does not even include a social house.
