Library is a vital resource and hub in the community

CLONDALKIN Library is proving to be a hive of activity of local community engagement.

“Every day is different, which is lovely,” said Aoife Horan, Executive Librarian. “I trained in this library, it’s a lovely place and village to work in,” she said.

This morning (February 23) Joan Connolly gave an introductory workshop on macramé, with 15 people expected to attend. Macramé is the art of knotting string in patterns to make decorative pieces.

“We provide workshops in areas where people might develop a passion further on,” said Aoife.

Author, Emily Hourican gave a talk yesterday evening (February 22) and spoke about her life, the books that she has written and what inspires her. “It was very well attended,” said Aoife.

Looking forward, for International Women’s Day, Christine Lennon Carey will facilitate mindful mandalas, which is a mindful art workshop.

On February 24, as part of International Reads Day, there was  a book swap taking place in the library. People have handed in their books and have received tokens which they can use tomorrow to get different books. “We’ve had a really good take up,” said Aoife, adding that she believes many of the books will be snapped up quickly.

As part of Seachtain na Gaeilge, Sarah Sparkles will be providing bi-lingual story-time for toddlers on March 09.

“Libraries are very strong in Ireland. Community engagement keeps it that way,” said Aoife. “The Clondalkin library is a vital community hub, a resource for the community, there is something for everybody,” said Aoife.

The library try to link in with Áras Chrónán as much as possible.

“That’s part of linking in with the community as well,” said Aoife.

All of the events are free of charge, but often booking is required because spaces are limited. People can find a full list of events at sdcc.ie and navigate to

‘Libraries’ where they can find the library brochures and newsletters. Clondalkin library is also on Facebook, Instagram and Tik-tok.

Taking out books on loan has never been more user friendly as there have been no late fees since 2018 and members can take out 12 books at the one time. Books can be taken out for three weeks and can be renewed for longer if needed.
