LIDL Ireland is selling a section of its site on the Belgard Road, which has planning permission for a pub.

The German discount retailer is currently developing a new concept store and two retail units at the former Belgard Inn site – with planning permission granted also providing for a pub.

However, The Echo learned that Lidl has engaged CBRE on its behalf to sell the section of the site earmarked for a public house.

In a statement to The Echo, Lidl Ireland said: “Lidl can confirm that it has engaged CBRE on its behalf to sell a section of its site on the Belgard Road which has planning permission for a pub.

“Lidl successfully obtained an amendment to the original planning application before Christmas.

“These amendments were made on the foot of feedback from pub operators to improve the overall operation and functionality of the proposed pub.

“Lidl have made this decision to ensure that the site is fully utilised and run in an appropriate manner.

“The site has its own independent entrance and parking.”

Last November, Lidl Ireland lodged a planning application seeking permission for the construction of a single point of vehicular entrance and exit from and onto the Old Belgard Road, for dedicated use by the public house.

Permission was sought for the reconfiguration of the car park in the area of the permitted pub, so that there could be dedicated parking and a pedestrian walkway linking the pub to the wider permitted “neighbourhood centre”.

The council granted permission for the amendments in December.

The site was for 43 years home to the Belgard Inn, which closed its doors in March 2018.

The site was levelled to pave the way for the new Lidl concept store and retail units, the construction of which is nearing completion.
