Lions roar into Cup Final

Abbey Seals Dublin Lions demonstrated their championship mettle as they faced a relentless challenge from McEvoy’s Cavan Eagles, ultimately securing a hard-fought 78-72 victory in the semi-final clash at Gurranabraher Credit Union Arena on Saturday night reports Rory Merriman.

This triumph sets the stage for their title defence in the upcoming showdown against Limerick Celtics in the InsureMyHouse.ie Women’s Division One Cup.

From the opening whistle, the Lions showcased their intent, with Emily Smyth’s three-pointer sparking an 11-point run that set the tone for the game.

Sydney Kin and Sophia Widmeyer emerged as formidable forces, with Kin contributing an impressive 26 points and 16 rebounds by the end of the pulsating encounter.

At halftime, Rob White’s side held a seemingly comfortable 50-25 lead, but the tenacious Cavan Eagles, refusing to yield, staged a powerful comeback in the third quarter.

Clawing back 16 points, they forced the defending champions to battle relentlessly until the final buzzer.

The Lions, propelled by Smyth’s crucial block and steal, regained composure in the face of Cavan’s defensive resurgence.

Katie Flanagan’s score and Widmeyer’s two free throws maintained a nine-point lead heading into the decisive fourth quarter.

Despite a spirited effort by Cavan, Destiny Robinson’s basket cutting the lead to six, the loss of Emma Tolan to foul trouble with just over four minutes remaining proved a setback for the Eagles.

Timely baskets by Kin, coupled with clutch free throws from Widmeyer, allowed the Lions to weather the storm and secure the victory.

In the aftermath of the intense contest, Rob White, the Head Coach of Abbey Seals Dublin Lions, acknowledged the resilience of both teams speaking with Basketball Ireland.

He praised Cavan for their determined comeback, acknowledging the challenge they posed.

White commended his own team, highlighting their ability to maintain composure and resilience in the face of adversity.

“Cavan, they were 25 down at halftime, and they came back.

“They really hurt us and made us think, but, credit to our girls as well, they were able to show that resilience when they did come back, and everybody played their part.

“It’s great for the girls and great for the club,” remarked White in reflection on the hard-fought victory.

As Abbey Seals Dublin Lions gear up for the final against Limerick Celtics, their journey through this challenging semi-final not only showcased their on-court prowess but also the character and determination that define a championship-caliber team.
