Local community needs to work together to get facilities it deserves

THE deadline for submissions and observations for 172 homes by Dublin City Council in Cherry Orchard is August 9.

The Part 8 development for social and affordable homes includes the construction of 141 three-bed terraced houses and 31 two-bed terraced houses.

One parking space will be permitted per house to the front, and private gardens to the rear.

The site is located on 57 hectares of council owned lands, between Cherry Orchard Hospital to the north, Wheatfield Prison, and Cherry Orchard Football Club to the south.

Site works are set to contain two public open spaces, infrastructure works, pathways, cycleways, and the construction of a link road to Ballyfermot Road – which is a development objective of the Park West Cherry Orchard Local Area Plan 2019.

Development of a pocket park and children’s playground will be located on the eastern section of the lands. Cllr Daithí Doolan (SF) said: “Social and affordable housing is urgently needed but Cherry Orchard needs more than housing.

This development needs to be seen in the context of the wider plan for hundreds of homes in Park West and more housing opposite St Ultans school.

“We need to ensure Dublin City Council is building communities, not just housing. I will be demanding that this development is directly linked to the delivery of sports and recreational facilities as well as more retail and improved transport.

“I am encouraging other politicians, residents and community groups to unite behind this demand.

“It is only by working together will we get the facilities this community deserves.”

Following a preliminary examination, the city council said there is “no real likelihood” of the development having significant effects on the environment and “therefore an EIA is not required”.

Plans are available for inspection during office hours at the South Central area offices at Ballyfermot Civic Centre, and online on the consultation section of the Dublin City Council website.

Submission or observations in writing, to the Executive Manager, Planning and Property Development Department, Dublin City Council, Civic Offices, Wood Quay, Dublin 8, before 4.30pm on August 9.

Submissions or observations can be made online on Citizens Space – https://consultation.dublincity.ie/ – by August 9.
