Local playwright Derek receives standing ovation following show
A FIVE-DAY run of a play written by a Ballyfermot playwright – a dark comedy called ‘A Very Irish Killing’ – kicked off in the Smock Alley theatre this week.
The run of shows began last Tuesday, February 28, with performances being staged every night until this Saturday, March 4.
The show is set on Christmas Eve, 1970, and follows June and April O’Brien, who are described as sisters, accomplices and orphans.
The show centres on their desire to commit ‘a very Irish killing’, with twists and turns that will keep audiences hooked.
Performances of ‘A Very Irish Killing’ were held in the Ballyfermot Community Civic Centre last month in advance of the Smock Alley run of shows.
Ballyfermot has a particular resonance with the writer of ‘A Very Irish Killing’, Derek Murphy, as he grew up in the area but has lived in New York since 1985.
Home is never far from his mind, however, with the majority of his work being set in Dublin and recalling his own experiences of growing up in the city.
Emma Faye from Basement Productions, who are producing the show, said: “We opened on Friday, February 24, in the Ballyfermot Community Civic Centre.
“Our audience was fantastic, and we received a standing ovation.
“Our fantastic actors are Robert Harrington, Tina Browne, Niamh Sweeney and Liam W Smyth.”
‘A Very Irish Killing’ is being performed in Smock Alley, Temple Bar, every night from 8pm to 9.40pm until Saturday, March 4, with tickets costing €16 each.
