Lovely Rita celebrates one hundred great years

ONE of Palmerstown’s most active residents celebrated her 100-year-old birthday recently with family and friends at Palmerstown Parish Centre.

Rita Heffernan, who lives on Kennelsfort Road, was originally from Skreen in Co Sligo and moved to Palmerstown where she raised her family.

“She is a very active women, still lives independently with some home help, and doesn’t always use a walking stick – it depends on her mood,” said Palmerstown resident Abigail O’Callaghan.

“She was a great baker, loves reading the Sunday papers, knitting, the Antiques Roadshow, and goes to bingo every Wednesday at the parish centre.

“Tánaiste France Fitzgerald sent her personal assistant to the birthday celebration with a beautiful orchid for Rita.”

South Dublin Mayor Paul Gogarty was in attendance for the celebration, to help Rita blow out the candles on the birthday cake.

Abigail is involved in the running of an afternoon tea dance, which takes place on the fourth Sunday of the month at the Springfield Hotel in Leixlip – with live music between 3-6pm, tickets €5.
