Lucan masters medal in Nationals

LUCAN Harriers boasted some impressive performances at last Saturday’s Irish Life National Masters Championships in Tullamore.

Gold medals were won by Carol Kearney in the Over 50 200m and Hilary McGee in Over 40 Weight for Distance – the first time this event was part of the championships.

Both Lucan's 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams won Silver

Breda Smyth emerged runner-up from the Over 45 1500m as did Carol Kearney in the Over 50 400m and Hilary McGee in Over 40 Shot Putt.

Lucan’s 4x100m relay team of Annette Durkan, Breda Smyth, Laura McAteer and Carol Kearney and the 4x400m team of McAteer, Hilary McGee, Tricia Gough and Bernie Stapleton also picked up silver in their respective contests.

Ben Prenter scooped a double bronze in Shot Putt and Weight for Distance while Claire Johnston registered PBs in both her 100m and 200m as did Annette Durkan in the 100m.

Elsewhere in the National Community Games Finals in Limerick last weekend Hannah Moriarty won a silver medal in the Long Jump while  Kate O’Connell took bronze in the Under 14 100m.

Aisling Fitzpatrick finished up sixth in the Under 14 Javelin while the Girls Under 14 4x100m Relay progressed to the semi-finals before Cillian Mullally was just denied further progress to the Under 16 100m semi-finals.

On another note, Gerry Byrne completed his second Ironman 70.3 which moved this year to Dún Laoghaire. 

The Ironman 70.3 consists of a strength-sapping 1.2 mile swim which takes place in Sandycove, a 56 mile bike ride through the Wicklow mountains followed by a 13.1 mile run along Dún Laoghaire Pier to the finish.
