By Brendan Grehan
A MAN who attempted to stab a garda with a snooker cue was remanded for a pre-sentence report by Tallaght Court.
Alex Johnston’s solicitor, Michael Hennessy, told Judge Patricia McNamara that his client had been on “hard liquor, tablets and cannabis” at the time of the incident.
Johnston, aged 38, with an address at Donomore Crescent, Tallaght, pleaded guilty to public intoxication, breaching the peace and producing a snooker cue while attempting to stab Garda Mark Shortt at Cushlawn Park, Tallaght, on March 30, 2015.
Sergeant Michael Ahern told Judge McNamara that at 2.05pm on March 30 last, Detective-Garda Gary Corrigan had been called to Cushlawn Park to deal with another incident when his attention was drawn to Johnston who was chasing after a car and attempting to damage it with a snooker cue.
Sgt Ahern said that on seeing the gardaí, Johnston broke the cue on his thigh and attempted to stab Garda Mark Shortt with it before being arrested.
Mr Hennessy, said his client had since apologised to the gardaí.
He said the incident had been a “wake-up call” for his client who had just completed a 14-week rehab course in the Camino Centre in Enfield.
Sgt Ahern said Johnston had 24 previous convictions.
Mr Hennessy said his client had no memory of the incident and had taken hard liquour, tablets and cannabis at the time of the incident.
Judge McNamara remanded Johnston on continuing bail to April for a pre-sentence report.
